Everyone talks about peak season in Bali. The pumping swells, the offshore winds, the electric energy across the island. And yes, peak season is incredible.
But here’s what not everyone tells you: the shoulder months (September to November and March to May) offer excellent waves, significantly smaller crowds, lower prices, and a version of Bali that feels a little more real. Less competition in the lineup, more space at the beachside cafés, and the island breathing at its own relaxed pace.
With September just around the corner, this blog focuses on the second shoulder season. If you’re planning a surf trip over the next few months, here is everything you need to know about weather, wave conditions, and why booking a trip to Kima Surf Camps in Bali in the shoulder season could be a great choice for your next surf trip.
Bali’s shoulder seasons fall during the transitional months flanking the peak dry period, March to May, as the dry season starts, and September to November just before the wet season begins. With September just around the corner, we’re focusing on the second shoulder season, which is where the magic really happens for surfers.
Here’s a simple breakdown of the full year:
The shoulder seasons sit in a sweet spot. The dry season swell is still delivering on the west coast, crowds have thinned out considerably, prices have dropped, and by October the east coast starts waking up too. It’s the kind of timing that makes surfers who’ve been before say: “next time, I’m going in September.”
As September progresses into October and November, Bali gradually transitions from the dry season towards wetter conditions.
September: September typically still brings plenty of sunshine, lower humidity and favourable offshore winds on the west coast, with consistent swell offering a range of surf conditions. Wave size can be more manageable at times, while larger swells can still arrive during favourable weather windows.
October: October is a true transition month. Humidity can begin to increase, winds become more variable, and early mornings can offer glassy conditions when the wind is light.
November: November marks the gradual transition towards the wet season. You can still expect warm tropical conditions, but rainfall becomes more likely and can vary considerably from year to year. Showers may be brief, but longer or heavier periods of rain are also possible. For surfers, conditions can become more variable as the month progresses, so flexibility is key.
Ask any surf guide at our camp, and they’ll tell you the same thing: the shoulder season offers incredible versatility for every style and skill level. September and October can still offer excellent surf on excellent surf on the west coast, and as November arrives, the east coast breaks start firing too.
September: September is a more reliable shoulder season month. The Indian Ocean swell is still consistent, the SE trade winds hold offshore on the Bukit Peninsula, and wave heights stay solid, but with fewer people in the lineup.
October: Wind direction shifts more frequently, and conditions can change day to day. But our surf guides know every surf spot on the island and will always take you to the right spot for the daily conditions. And when the conditions line up, it can be seriously good.
November: November is a transitional month, with conditions becoming increasingly variable. Depending on swell, wind and weather, the west coast can still produce good surf, while east-coast spots such as Keramas and Serangan may offer more opportunities as the seasonal pattern shifts.
Beginners: The sandy beach breaks at Seminyak, Canggu and Uluwatu are consistent and forgiving throughout the shoulder season.
Our Kima Surf Camp in Seminyak is perfect for first-timers, gentle waves, sandy bottoms, and walking distance from our Learn-to-Surf Program that is running daily.
Intermediates: Shoulder season is arguably the sweet spot for intermediates. Canggu’s beach breaks are fun and punchy, while Uluwatu and Bingin deliver proper waves without the July/August intensity. Fewer people in the lineups mean higher wave counts, extra coaching focus, and faster progression.
Plus, our Kima Boat transfers you directly to offshore outer reefs like Serangan, Hyatt Reef, and Airport Rights for less crowded, glassy waves. Be sure to join our daily video analysis sessions to break down your technique and level up fast!
Advanced: The advanced surf spots in Uluwatu, Canggu and Seminyak fire throughout these months. Advanced surfers can charge heavy reef sections at Echo Beach in Canggu, or lock into world-class barrels at Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin, with far more breathing room in the lineup.
Shoulder season is one of Bali’s best-kept secrets. The shoulder months can offer excellent waves, fewer crowds, and potentially better-value accommodation and activities, it’s the perfect time to experience the island. What better way to do it then with Kima Surf Camps!
If you’re learning in Seminyak, progressing in Canggu, or chasing world-class waves in Uluwatu, Kima’s has a beautiful place for you to stay in all 3 locations. Our Bali surf camps have the perfect setup for your next surf trip.
