Bali’s East Coast is where reef breaks meet uncrowded lineups. Often overlooked in favour of Bali’s West Coast, this area comes alive during the Bali wet season, offering crystal-blue water and powerful waves.
For the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, the East Coast remains a must-surf destination for intermediate to advanced surfers. At Kima Surf Bali we have two camps, one in Seminyak and one in Canggu, both camps have guided day trips to these epic surf spots along Bali’s East Coast.
The best time to surf the East Coast is in Bali’s wet season, from November to March. This side of the island offers everything, from soft reef breaks for beginners to barrelling waves for advanced surfers. Early mornings provide the most glassy and uncrowded conditions. There are three main areas for surfing on the East Coast, including Nusa Dua, Sanur and Keramas.
Nusa Dua is one of the most consistent East Coast spots, offering us a range of reef breaks.
Mushrooms is one of the most advanced spots in Nusa Dua. It is a fast right-hander that breaks over shallow reef, sometimes even barrelling for the more advanced surfers. Close by is Mushroom Secret, another right-hander that is a lot more mellow. This spot is for everyone, with a very mellow area further inside for beginner surfers too. Then there is Black Stone, an intermediate to advanced left-hand wave (sometimes right). This wave can get quite steep, so if you are looking for something more mellow, head 50m south towards Mengiat.
Further South of the island, we have Geger and Chicken wings. Geger is a spot that offers both lefts and rights. The left is a short and fast ride, with a fun bowling end and works best from low to mid-tide. The right wave is a very well-known spot that is suitable for advanced surfers when the swell is large. It has strong currents and long paddles, so it can be quite taxing.
In Sanur, there are two main spots that you will be able to visit with Kima Surf: Serangan and Baby Reef. Both these spots require a boat trip to reach the reef. With Kima, our guides will take you to the spot in our Kima boats, which will wait for you to surf and bring you straight back to the car.
Serangan is an epic wave that has a few peaks to sit. The most advanced wave is on the right when looking out from the beach. There are two other peaks that are slightly more mellow, but still pack a punch.
If you are looking for a more relaxed wave, you can surf at Baby Reef. This left-hand wave offers fun and smaller waves than its neighbour, Serangan. On small days, it is perfect for practising your cross-stepping on a longboard and on a day with bigger swell, you’ll see intermediates ripping long lefts, as well as more beginner surfers catching some of their first reef waves.
Keramas is a heavy, high-performance right-hand reef break, known for its long sections. This wave is ideal for manoeuvres and huge barrels! Experienced surfers love this spot since it holds well when the swell is big. This spot is the best to surf between mid and high tide. If you’re heading here, make sure to bring your A game and some respect for the local surfers, since this spot can get quite competitive.
Bali’s East Coast is best suited to intermediate to advanced surfers due to the shallow reefs and powerful waves.
With that said, don’t worry if you are a beginner – Kima Surf’s learn to surf program runs year-round. Even in the wet season, you can learn to surf through our 5-day learn to surf course and possibly even advance to sessions heading to the East Coast!
Our Kima Surf camps in Canggu and Seminyak offer great access to Bali’s best beginner-friendly waves. During the rainy season, we organize day trips from both camps to the east coast, where our guides take you by van to these surf spots. You can choose either two, two-hour sessions or one longer session, and for spots in Sanur, our boat will take you out to the reefs for an unforgettable surf experience. In between, you’ll grab lunch and chill with your surf guides and friends, the ultimate surf day!
So whether you are chasing advanced reef breaks or just trying to ease your way into surfing over reef, Kima Surf will help you get the most out of Bali’s East Coast!
