Trip Advisor

surfguiding

Surf guiding is included in your package price for the Kima Bali surf resort Canggu.

Twice a day, every day! Surf guiding is the core of our Surf Camp, we organise up to 16 trips daily, seven days a week, for all surf levels, to various breaks all around Bali. In other words, you can join two guided sessions per day. Small groups divided into different skill levels visit surf spots taking current tide, swell and wind conditions into account. For total beginners we recommend booking our 5-days Learn-to-Surf package.

LOCAL KIMA SURF GUIDES

Our well-trained Kima Bali surf camp guides always surf with you in the water, giving you tips and showing you tricks. They are familiar with the island and will tell you everything you need to know about the spot, pointing out any hazards. Our guided surf tours are always adapted to the given conditions and, depending on the swell, the odd secret spot may come to light.

SUITED TO YOUR ABILITIES

Sign up for the surf sessions that suit you and your abilities in our surf plan the evening before. Our surf guides are happy to help you make the selection. For total beginners we recommend booking our 3-day surf school package.

THEORY LESSONS & VIDEO ANALYSIS

Some of the surf sessions are filmed and analysed afterwards, six times a week. You can also join the theory lessons that we offer six times a week. Both options are included in your package.

BOARD RENTAL

Don't worry about bringing your own board, we have it covered. We provide shortboards (5'8” - 7'0”), funshapes and mini-malibus (7'0” - 7'8”) as well as longboards (9'0”) available for every level and all conditions. Leashes and Lycra are included in the rental price. Any repairs or loss of equipment will need to be paid for.

INSURE YOUR SURFBOARD

Be on the safe side and insure your rental board. We will carry the costs for any repairs over a period of one day to three weeks, whether it's a tiny dent or a major break. Any damage will be repaired professionally. If the board or parts of it get lost - even if it is in the water - the costs have to be paid by the user.

Beginner Surfer

BEGINNER SURFER

For beginners there are many semi beach breaks right outside our door that are ideal for riding your first green wave and improving your take off. For total beginners we recommend booking our 5-day surf school package.

Intermediate Surfer

INTERMEDIATE SURFER

For intermediate surfers Bali has a whole series of soft reef breaks and semi beach breaks. There are many perfect waves nearby or famous spots a bit further away that will push your skills and hopefully make you an advanced surfer by the end of your stay.

Advanced Surfer

ADVANCED SURFER

Of course, advanced surfers also get their money's worth in Bali. The best waves all around Bali are on our schedule: the legendary Airport breaks, the classic Bali waves such as Dreamland and Balangan or the world-famous spots like Padang-Padang, Keramas or Uluwatu.

food and drinks

Our camp restaurant is open every day from 7 am to 11 pm. Our internationally experienced chef prepares local and international dishes for you, exclusively from fresh ingredients, every day. We cook for all tastes and naturally have vegan and vegetarian options too.

breakfast included

Our delicious breakfast options are available from 7 am to 12 pm at the surf hotel in Canggu. Free tea and coffee are available every day until 6 pm. Our standard breakfast with a choice of fresh fruit juices, a starter such as a fruit salad or pancakes, and a main course like eggs, fried rice or fried noodles, is included in the camp price.

indonesian food

The cost of living in Bali is fairly low. A healthy and filling meal (e.g. fish with a side dish) costs around 3 €. The obligatory evening beer on the beach is likely to be the most expensive thing on the healthy Indonesian food menu. Fruit salad or Nasi/Mie Goreng (fried rice/noodles) can be found even on the most remote beaches. Our restaurant in the Canggu surf camp also offers a variety of Indonesian dishes.

International food

In Canggu there are plenty of good restaurants with high-quality food that cater to western tastes. You'll find all sorts of food: German, Persian, Italian, Japanese, Greek and Brazilian, plus international fast food chains.

UPGRADE TO HALF-BOARD

In addition to your standard breakfast you will receive a meal from our menu in our restaurant every day after 5:30 PM.

KIMA BOTTLE & DRINKING WATER

Use this bottle to refill from our fresh drinking water dispensers in the camp at any time. The enormous amounts of plastic waste are increasingly becoming a problem in Bali. To help keep Bali as plastic-free as possible buy a Kima bottle and unlimited drinking water for only 20 €!

Our surf camp in Canggu goes on daily explorations to surf spots close by or further away. Thanks to our years of experience, we will bring you to the best breaks, beaches and reefs up and down the island. We travel across the island by boat or car in small groups and are guided by the wishes and abilities of our guests. That means at least 14 surf sessions a week.

CULTURAL & SPORTING TRIPS

What would a surf holiday be without the social programme? We can help you to organise day trips to the cultural highlights of Hindu Bali - palaces, rice terraces and temples in the hinterland - and to the finest dining and shopping options plus hip hotspots along the coast. Prefer doing sports? That's not a problem either at the surf camp in Canggu! Choose from exciting activities leading on and under water, go hiking on the volcano or hop onto a motorbike for the Bali dirt bike tour.

ON YOUR OWN

Prefer exploring the surroundings yourself? Minibuses (three guests and more) and mountain bikes are available free of charge. Please tell us one day in advance should you wish to use the vans and don't forget to refuel before returning! For a small amount of money, you can also rent a moped with board holder or organise a driver for short trips to the cash machine or supermarket. Important: An international driver's license is necessary in order to drive any vehicle in Bali. The standard European or Australian driver's license in card-format is not sufficient.

We are happy to pick you up from the airport and bring you back in time for your departure. If you stay at the surf camp in Canggu for at least five nights, the transfer is included in the package price. For shorter stays, we bill 15€ per person and drive. In case your pick up point or your destination is not the airport or you're already in Bali, please speak to our team during the booking process and we will be happy to assist. Please be sure to inform us of your flight or address details at least 48 hours before check in to ensure we have a driver available for you.

Klaus

This surf camp is perfect! I only booked for 10 days and in the end I stayed more than 6 weeks. I guess that says it all: I felt really comfortable and it was like a second family! The staff was super friendly and always helpful! I stayed in the private lodge, which accommodates 3 dorms with a private pool and kitchen and I honestly can say, that it was one of the best dorms I ever stayed in. The best part of course was the surfing! I started as a beginner and was able to join more challenging sessions in the end of my stay! The guides help you a lot and it's always fun with them in the water! I almost forgot to mention the stunning breakfast, which is included in the price! I arrived as a solo traveller in Bali, but with KIMA I made so many new friends from all over the world! I had a blast with you guys and trust me, you'll see me again!

Dejan

It was my third time to visit this camp in one year. That should tell you all about this place. Perfect in any way. Staff, surf instructors, food, people, maintenance... whole atmosphere. Last visit was in "off season" and again camp was full and we surf every day... Those guys Kima surf instructors they will drive you through entire island if needed to find waves. It's awesome that the sessions are quite small and adjusted to your surf level! Every surf lesson is well organised and I like the app they using too! Now they added yoga, massage... so when you think it cannot get any better they just add something new. Really amazing place with great vibe and people. Coming back soon!

Sarina

I warmly suggest to any new guest to choose you! Me and my holidays' mates are really glad to have chosen Kima! And highly happy to have been part of this great and friendly experience of sport and life!

GETTING TO BALI

HOW CAN I GET A CHEAP FLIGHT TO BALI?

Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from Europe/America to Bali; you will have at least one stop over. Cheap flights can be found through the following internet portals: Skyscanner, Traveloka, Checkfelix or Opodo.

WHAT AIRPORT DO I FLY TO IN BALI?

Your destination will be I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar (DPS), Bali. It is the island’s only international airport.

CAN I BRING MY OWN SURFBOARD?

Some airlines transport surfboards free of charge, provided your total checked baggage weight is under the usual allowance (20 to 23 kg). But please check with your airline beforehand as it seems to be handled quite arbitrarily (make sure they know it is a ‘real’ surfboard to avoid mix-ups with wind surfboards).

WILL I BE MET AT THE AIRPORT IN BALI?

Airport transfers (airport pick-up and drop-off) are included for a minimum 5-night-stay in Kima Canggu Surf Camp. A small fee is charged for pick-up if you stay less than five nights. To make sure everything goes smoothly, let us know your exact flight details by email (date and time of arrival, airline and flight number) and your WhatsApp number at least 48 hours before you set off. Once you arrive at the airport in Bali, please login to the airport’s free WiFi and you will receive a text from our driver with his name, photo and information about the meeting point at the airport.

VISAS FOR INDONESIA

HOW DO I GET A VISA?

Please refer to our latest updates on visa regulations for traveling to Indonesia. At the moment visa-on-arrival is available for 23 countries. Please visit www.welcomebacktobali.com for more details.

FINANCES

WHAT’S THE CURRENCY IN BALI?

The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). The fluctuating exchange rate is approximately 15.000 Rupiah for € 1.

HOW AND WHERE CAN I CHANGE MONEY IN BALI?

Lots of money exchangers will try and bait you with good exchange rates. To avoid any rip-offs, you should only change your cash at official P.T. Moneychangers. Make sure that you get your money changed into large notes (50,000 or 100,000). This is what legitimate money changers will do. Exchanging money is also possible at the reception of Kima Canggu surf camp Bali on Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.

CAN I PAY FOR MY SURF CAMP ON THE SPOT?

We require you to pay a full amount one week before your arrival at the camp. If payment is not made in full, we do not guarantee your bed at the camp. Credit card payment is currently not possible on location.

CAN I GET MONEY FROM AN ATM?

There are lots of ATMs around our surf camps in Bali and Sri Lanka where you can withdraw local currency with your credit card or bank card (Mastercard, Visa, Maestro, Cirrus). Make sure you know the pin number of your card(s). The maximum amount per transaction varies depending on the ATM, but the absolute maximum per transaction is about 200 Euros. Several transactions can be done one after another. It is best to use ATMs inside banks with security guards to avoid scams.

We have all kinds of different sizes and surfboard shapes for every level. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, intermediate, advanced or pro surfer, we have the right board for you! Our surfboards are made of high-quality epoxy or polyester resin and for beginners we have the best soft-tops available in the market by FLOWT and OCEAN&EARTH. This means the best possible performance on the water. However, boards can be easily damaged if they’re not handled properly, in this case repairs cost must be paid by the user. For a small fee you can insure your rented board to cover all the damages. In the possible event that you lose the board or parts of it, you will still have to take over the costs despite the insurance.

DO I NEED A WETSUIT?

The average water temperature is about 27 to 30 °C; leave your wetsuit at home.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SURF LESSONS & SURF GUIDING?

Surf lessons are professional lessons done by a certified surf school. Kima recommends surf lessons to beginners who have never surfed before in order to get a basic knowledge about the waves and first training with soft-top surfboards in order to reduce the risk of injuries and cuts. We offer a five-days (6 lessons) Learn-To-Surf package for all our beginners. Those lessons need to be booked separately and are not included in our room/surf-guiding packages. Surf guiding means that our professional surf guides will take you to surf spots that match your ability, give you a detailed spot introduction and be in the water with you to support you in catching as many waves as possible. Our surf guides will provide you with feedback and give you advice on how to improve your surfing skills. A beginner who is booked into a three-day Learn-to-Surf program can already join the afternoon surf guided sessions of Kima Surf from the second day, as the surf school lessons are provided in the morning.

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK THE SURF SCHOOL?

For absolute beginners we recommend our five-days Learn-to-Surf package. This way you save a lot of time and avoid making mistakes that are difficult to straighten out later on. Along with the surf school course, you can surf a second time later in the day with our surf guides (depending on surf conditions). If you can handle a take-off and manage to surf to the beach standing upright ahead of the white wash, you do not need to attend surf school and your best bet is our surf guiding where you’ll learn with lots of practice. Our surf guides will help you and give you lots of tips so you can take your surfing to the next level.

DO I NEED MY OWN EQUIPMENT AT THE SURF SCHOOL?

Learn-To-Surf package at the surf school includes: lycra, towels, sunscreen and drinking water. For the surf school and the surf guiding sessions you need to rent a board in advance or directly from the camp.

WHEN DOES THE SURF SCHOOL START?

You can start the Learn-to-Surf course any day from Monday to Sunday.

WHEN DOES THE GUIDING PROGRAM START?

The latest registration for the morning and afternoon session needs be done up to 8 pm the day before. Please be aware that you need to sign up in our session planner first. Nothing will stop you heading to various surfing spots once you get your equipment and do a briefing.

ARE BALI’S WAVES SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS?

The endless surf spots in Bali have the right waves for all levels. If the swell is too big at the beach, our surf guides always know other spots with nice little breaks for our beginners.

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE IN BALI?

May to October is the dry season in Bali with an air temperature of 30 °C and 2 to 3 days of rain a month. November to April is the humid season and it rains more often, but mostly in the morning or evening, at sunrise or sunset. In between the sun always shines and everything’s budding and blooming. The rain normally lasts no longer than half an hour, but it pours down quite heavily. It can rain during the daytime sometimes, as the weather anywhere is always a bit of a gamble. Sometimes it won’t rain the whole week and then later it rains a few days in a row.

WHAT’S THE TEMPERATURE LIKE IN BALI?

All year round, the temperature in Bali is always around 30 °C. At night during the European summer months it can cool down to as little as 24 °C.

WHAT’S THE WATER TEMPERATURE IN BALI?

LIFESTYLE

WHAT KIND OF FOOD IS THERE IN BALI?

There is endless variety. From tasty Indonesian street food stalls and mini-restaurants to Italian, Mexican, fondue, steak houses or cute little cafes. In and around Canggu you can try different cuisine every day.

WHAT’S THE NIGHTLIFE LIKE IN CANGGU?

It depends on what you want, you can either sip cocktails at a beach club or go dancing to house music. Around Caggu you’ll find a massive number of clubs, bars and discotheques so you can party all night long.

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I TAKE WITH ME?

As a rule of thumb, you can go around in a bikini or board shorts and flip-flops during the day. In the evening when you go out to eat, a T-shirt, shirt and long trousers are a good idea as they also help against the mosquitos

ILLNESS, VACCINATIONS AND INSURANCE

WHAT VACCINATIONS DO I NEED?

You need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter Indonesia, please refer to our page with the latest travel regulations update. We recommend a tetanus boost (1 jab in your rear end), hepatitis A (2 to 3 jabs, starting 6 weeks before your trip), typhoid (oral vaccination, 3 weeks before) and, if you want to be on the safe side, malaria prophylaxis and rabies vaccination. Bali is classified as malaria-free. However, there are some isolated cases of infection now and again. Bear in mind that malaria prophylaxis has side effects on organs and mind. If you act wisely (repellents, protective/covering clothing), you can keep the risk to a minimum. If you want to travel further, you should find out the situation of your preferred islands.

WHAT’S MEDICAL CARE LIKE IN BALI AND SRI LANKA?

All kinds of antiseptic creams, lotions, band-aids, etc. can be found very cheaply at local pharmacies. Medical care in the tourist regions of Bali is good and mostly up to western standards (hygiene, disinfection, educational standards of the medics, etc.).

WHAT INSURANCE SHOULD I TAKE OUT?

Please be aware that starting on 1st January, 2022, Covid-19 insurance is mandatory for international travelers arriving to Indonesia, please refer to our latest travel regulations update. We strongly recommend that everyone coming to Kima Surf Bali should have travel health insurance. Apart from treatment expenses and drugs on location, this also covers return transport by an emergency service. This insurance costs about € 20. A must for everyone and mostly valid for a whole year. As well as travel health insurance, you can also take out casualty insurance (hospital daily benefits or even a pension in a worst-case scenario) and travel and baggage insurance. For Australian guests, please check www.indosurf.com.au.
