Reef breaks are not always about shallow scares or huge barrels. Many of Bali’s reef breaks produce waves that are smooth with a playful face which is perfect for intermediate surfers starting to practice their maneuvers and techniques. The best reef breaks have a few essential characteristics in common:
Medewi is Bali’s longest left hand wave, producing rides up to 300m long and is the ultimate spot for intermediate surfers who are looking for long and cruisy rides to perfect their tricks. Imagine smooth takeoffs, lots of carving space and a relaxed local atmosphere. The drive is worthwhile for the long lefts and the distinctive pebbly shoreline.
Berawa is located a short distance from our Kima Canggu Camp, and it is a great spot that provides intermediate surfers with a fantastic challenge away from Echo Beach’s throng. While The Bombie can be a steep take off that runs into deep water and on bigger days should only be surfed by advanced surfers. On the inside section closer to the beach we have a mix of sand and rock that delivers a punchy left and right which also becomes an advanced surfer spot when the swell gets big. So keep an eye on the swell before coming here as a 3 star surfer.
With the guests‘ ability to surf guiding twice daily and Berawa’s reef break close to the camp, it’s easy to progress fast. After your session, enjoy premium camp perks—ice baths, a rooftop gym, and expert coaching feedback—making Kima Canggu a top pick for intermediate surfers chasing the full Bali surf lifestyle.
Toro Toro is one of Bali’s most enjoyable and gentle reef break waves. It is only reachable by boat and is located right off the airport runway. It breaks cleanly and slowly over a deep reef, making it ideal for intermediate surfers who are still honing their takeoffs, trimming and confidence.
Our experienced Surf guides provide professional guiding and feedback while our private boat facilitates direct transfers to Toro Toro. We offer high-quality surfboards, so you’re never left without the right gear.
Airport Lefts is situated across from Toro Toro and it breaks softer than many of Bukit’s waves, breaking into a deep-water channel. For intermediate surfers looking for a clean face with room to practise positioning and rail work, it’s a dream come true on small to medium swells.
Kima Surf will take you to these reef breaks with our camp boat and after an epic session of ripping this reef break you and your surf guide will go over your video analysis footage to help you improve your turns, cutbacks and more. You can turn every wave into growth with the support of our surf theory workshops and two daily guided sessions.
Old Man’s is just slightly more advanced compared to Batu Bolong, Old Mans is also an advanced beginner/ intermediate spot. Old Mans is a semi-reef break that produces A-frame waves, with some long rides. There’s a good mixture of smaller waves in the inside section and more powerful waves further out, making it an ideal place for surfers to improve their skills.
Pererenan is a vibrant surf location in Canggu that offers a variety of difficult and gentler waves. Generally more laid-back, the left-hand break at the river mouth offers longer, cruisy rides that are ideal for practicing your cut backs.
Both these reef breaks are walking distance away from our Kima Canggu Camp.
Bali offers some of the best reef breaks for intermediate surfers, from the clean faces of Toro Toro and Airport Lefts to the lengthy carving walls at Medewi. With each session, we at Kima Surf make sure you do more than just surf them.
Your next breakthrough is only a session away with twice-daily surf guiding, theory workshops, boat access to offshore breaks, and post-surf feedback.
